Louisville Rugby

Louisville Rugby Football Club was formed in 1969 and is one of the oldest clubs in the Midwest.

Today we’re a dynamic organization of players, young and old. Our youngest players are in their early 20s and our oldest are in their early 40s. There are younger teams available for High School and University players.

Louisville Rugby plays two versions of Rugby Union. A 15 man team in the spring and fall, and a 7 per side team in the summer.  You will see the 7 a side game in the Olympics this summer.

We play in USA Rugby’s Midwest Division III South, versus teams from Lexington, Cincinnati, and Columbus, OH.  The fall season is made up of mainly league matches, but the spring season allows LRFC to travel to various tournaments and social locations to play some great clubs. Recent friendly opponents have included teams from Chattanooga, Chicago, Dayton, and Kalamazoo.

During the summer 7’s season, we play a variety of competitive tournaments and also host our own Derby City 7’s tournament.

Each year we try to play a few purely social tournaments for the fun of it.  Recent social tournaments Louisville has played include Pitch-A-Tent 7’s in Chattanooga, Snowball 10’s in Kalamazoo, and Santa Claus 7’s in Knoxville.

Practices are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, two hours a night, with the times varying a bit depending on the available daylight.  Often we play touch rugby on Saturdays when we don’t have matches, and occasionally we have voluntary practices on other nights.  Practices begin in February for the spring season and in August for the fall season.  Our coaches and players are involved in the local rugby community through refereeing, coaching, and otherwise assisting in other matches – high school, college, women’s, and men’s.

It is our vision as a club to see the sport growing at all levels across Louisville, Kentucky, and the US.
